To investigate the characteristics and evolution of very fast transient overvoltage (VFTO) signals generated by disconnector operations in gas-insulated switchgear (GIS), this study first proposes a dynamic arc model based on an optimized arc extinction criterion. Subsequently, the accuracy of the improved model is verified through theoretical analysis, simulation, and experimental comparisons. Finally, by comparing simulation results from this model with test data, the development patterns of VFTO signals are revealed. The results demonstrate that the proposed dynamic arc model effectively characterizes VFTO phenomena in GIS equipment, while also confirming that VFTO signals exhibit high amplitude (maximum overvoltage reaching 1.9 p.u.) and broad frequency bandwidth (ultra-high-frequency components up to 30 MHz).
