A double-tube gear-shaped reactor for solar photocatalytic degradation of R134a was proposed to address the problems of low photon utilization rate and uneven irradiance distribution in the parabolic-trough concentrating reactor. The reaction and heat-transfer performance of the proposed variable-density and uniform-density gear-shaped reactors was analyzed numerically simulations. The research results show that when the influence of temperature is not considered
the proposed gear-shaped reactor can significantly increase the total reaction rate. When the influence of temperature is taken into account
the reaction-rate enhancement is somewhat reduced
but variable-density gear-shaped reactors with larger numbers of teeth remain effective in most cases. Variable-density gear-shaped reactors exhibit better reaction and heat-transfer performance than uniform-density gear-shaped reactors.
