A transparent cylinder liner piston ring engine incorporating fluorescence induced technology was developed to realize the in-situ measurement of the distribution of lubricating oil film between cylinder liner and piston rings in the circumferential direction
in order to address the issue of local liner scuffing that usually takes place in an opposed piston opposed cylinder engine due to poor distribution of lubricating oil between the cylinder liner and piston rings
resulting in high lube oil consumption. The distribution of lube oil film between the cylinder liner and piston rings was measured at the speed of 200 r/min and oil temperature of 85~150 ℃. The results indicate that the variation in lube oil temperature has little effect on the thickness of lube oil film between piston rings and cylinder when piston is at top dead center
however the fluorescence intensity of lube oil film on the sides of the piston rings towards the combustion chamber has remarkable enhancement with the increase of the lube oil temperature. The enhancement in the transportation effect of lube oil to the combustion chamber is caused by the decrease of the viscosity of lube oil attributed to the increase of the temperature.
