The lower Yellow River is a world-renowned suspended river
and is also the key point in the governance of Yellow River. Water and sediment regulation scheme based on the Xiaolangdi Reservoir has achieved remarkable success within the past 20 years
with overall channel degradation of the lower Yellow River as well as the formation of middle-water channel. However
the governance of the lower Yellow River also encounters new challenges
including dramatically changing water and sediment situation
reduction in channel degradation efficiency
and insufficient subsequent power of the Xiaolangdi Reservoir. Based on the above background
this article systematically reviews the research results on the water and sediment situation
river evolution
and systematic governance of the lower Yellow River since the operation of Xiaolangdi Reservoir. On this basis
it suggests that in the future
in-depth research should be carried out on the evolution laws and water and sediment regulation of the lower Yellow River
the engineering system for water and sediment regulation in the lower Yellow River should be improved
and river management models in the lower Yellow River should be explored and innovated.
