Developing 10-GW-level far-offshore wind clusters poses unprecedented transmission and networking challenges. This paper reviews existing offshore wind transmission modes and novel compact DC converter schemes
analyzes multi-terminal DC grid topologies and offshore-onshore interfaces
and evaluates the economic performance of various DC transmission-networking combinations. For transmission schemes
while DC transmission remains a preferred solution
there is an urgent need to address the issue of compact offshore converter stations. For networking topologies
the star-hub configuration offers comprehensive advantages
with onshore DC hubs and integrated offshore-onshore transmission being highly suitable for delivering ultra-large-scale offshore wind power to load centers. Multi-terminal DC hub networking using compact converters is vital for far-offshore
large-capacity wind power development. Future breakthroughs are needed in novel large-capacity
low-cost compact converters
multi-level coordinated control principles
and integrated global fault ride-through techniques.
