Accurate measurement of the ion wind generated by electrohydrodynamic (EHD) is crucial for evaluating the energy efficiency of drones and electric aircraft
and has the potential to enhance the sustainability and stability of their propulsion systems. To address the stable measurement of EHD parameters in strong electromagnetic interference environments
this paper proposes an EHD passive measurement method based on Fabry-Perot (F-P) sensor. By integrating a pressure-sensitive element with passive optical sensing
EHD thrust response testing was achieved under bipolar corona discharge conditions. By using a corona discharge platform with adjustable needle-plate electrode
the dynamic output characteristics of the sensor under different voltages
polarities
and discharge distances are measured. Repeatability test and error analysis of the sensor were conducted
revealing the evolution pattern of micro-deformation in the ion wind-induced sensor’s sensitive membrane. Calibration results demonstrate that the sensor exhibits a sensitivity of 1.8 μN/kV under optical calibration
with excellent linearity (R²=99.2%) and dynamic tracking performance. The spectral shift produced by the sensor under negative corona discharge EHD excitation is higher than that under positive corona discharge at the same voltage. Continuous and simultaneous ionic wind sensing utilizing the optical EHD sensor provides a passive monitoring solution and fundamental data perception for the dynamic parameters of propulsion system.
