High-voltage direct current (HVDC) circuit breaker is a key device for ensuring the safe and stable operation of DC power grids. In order to enhance the operational performance and economic viability of the circuit breaker
a topology scheme for a current-limiting hybrid high-voltage direct current (HVDC) circuit breaker based on coupled inductor is proposed. By employing a rational topology design
the primary side of the fully coupled inductor is used as a current-limiting branch to suppress the rise of fault current. The coupling effect of the coupled inductor is utilized to accelerate the interruption of fault current; in the structure
a bypass branch is introduced to absorb the energy generated on the fault side
which reduces the energy dissipation pressure on the arrester. By employing a combination of coupled inductors and thyristors
the control of the current-limiting branch and the operation of the surge arrester are achieved
thereby reducing the dependence on IGBT. Additionally
the proposed topology does not require an additional pre-charging device
and these structural designs may improve the operation performance of the circuit breaker
and are favour for increasing a certain economic advantage to the circuit breaker. Taking the 500 kV four-terminal DC power grid as the application background
we design the internal key parameters
and establish a simulation model in the PSCAD/EMTDC software to verify the performance of the proposed DC circuit breaker. Finally
the operational performance of the proposed DC circuit breaker is analyzed and compared with existing DC circuit breaker solutions.
