The permanent magnet (PM) propulsion motor is a critical power component in aviation electric propulsion systems
where efficient cooling technology is essential for enhancing motor performance and ensuring reliable operation. Compared with ground-based motors and conventional aviation motors
the cooling technologies for aviation PM propulsion motors face more stringent and specialized requirements and challenges
necessitating further research and breakthroughs. This paper first summarizes the characteristics
requirements
and classifications of cooling technologies from multiple dimensions. Considering the unique characteristics of aviation propulsion motors and their cooling systems
it systematically discusses the mechanisms
current research progress
applicability of thermal conduction
convective heat transfer
and phase-change heat transfer technologies for high power/torque density PM propulsion motors across various types of aviation electric propulsion systems. On this basis
the development trends of new cooling technologies for propulsion motors
integrated cooling of propulsion motors and inverters
and comprehensive thermal management for propulsion motors and propulsor units are systematically reviewed.
