A single source multilevel inverter with boosting capability was developed by combining switched capacitor(SC) technique with asymmetric cascaded H-bridge structure. Specifically
a low-voltage SC unit and a high-voltage SC unit were embedded in the DC sides of two cascaded H-bridges
respectively; the proposed inverter used four capacitors to generate 17 different output voltage levels. With a bidirectional switch between the two cascaded H-bridges
the two SC units were powered by the same DC source simultaneously. Due to the large number of output levels
the inverter can achieve low harmonic content and low switching loss under low frequency modulation. In addition
as the capacitors are charged multiple times during one cycle of the output voltage
their voltages can be balanced automatically. In this paper
the nearest level modulation was applied to control the inverter
and the output voltage harmonic and capacitors’ voltage ripple were analyzed in detail. Finally
feasibility of the inverter and correctness of theoretical analysis were experimentally verified.
