Some advances in researches and tests for geotechnical engineering in resent years are described briefly. Several aspects of geomechanics on unsaturated soil

discontinuous deformation analysis(DDA) and numerical manifold method(NMM) analysis methods and geosynthetics technology are also described simply. The centrifuge modelling and computerized tomography(CT) technology used in geotechnical field are introduced. Some points are emphasized: more fundamental research work should be taken for unsaturated soil; the NMM analysis method can be applied widely in geotechnical field; the high technology and equipment should be introduced and utilized for soil tests and engineering monitoring; and the working mechanism of geosythetics engineering should be studied more clearly. Finally

some comments on the problem of geotechnique developing are also pointed out
