The filter paper method is one of indirect methods for measuring soil suction. The accuracy of the measurement is highly dependent on the suction calibration for the testing filter paper. The basic principle of the filter paper method is introduced and its relevant studies are reviewed. A kind of domestic filter paper
named “Double-circle No.203”
is selected for the total suction calibration test with the sodium chloride solution method; and the result of the calibration test is well fitted by a bilinear regression curve. The suction calibration curves of the domestic filter paper with a brand name of “Double-circle No.203” are compared with those of a typical abroad filter paper of “Whatman’s No.42”. It is found that the matric suction calibration curves of the two filter papers are nearly the same
while the break-point water content of the total suction calibration curve of the “Double-circle No.203” filter paper is higher than that of the “Whatman’s No.42” filter paper.
