the indentation test is an effective method to characterize the mechanical properties of materials such as metals
polymers and ceramics. The objective of this work is to provide a comprehensive methodology for the characterization of geomaterials (rocks) by microindentation (indentation in microns). The study concerns the calibration of the device and its application to the characterization of rocks. Compared with the conventional axial compression test
Young’s modulus and compression resistance obtained by microindentation test are discussed. On the other hand
for the purpose of the microindentation test under confining pressure
the modified apparatus is presented. Through this type of microindentation
the dependence of sandstone on the confining pressure is shown.
