Three-dimensional shrinkage tests are developed for use in determining index of volumetric shrinkage with respect to water content for expansive soils in Guangxi
China; and for use in heave predictions of expansive soil grounds. Static cone penetration tests are used in expansive soil investigations
and its test results (the relationship between specific penetration resistance and depth of expansive soil deposits) are used to determine active zone of expansive soils. A theoretical formula is developed to determine cracking depth of expansive soils. Depth of active zone from static cone penetration tests and from theoretical formula are identical to results from survery in situ. Idealized moisture boundary profile for Guangxi expansive soil is given to calculate ground heave. Ground heave of expansive soils is used as the basis for classification of expansive soil ground. The results of expansive ground heave have significant meaning to the choice of foundations of buildings in expansive soil grounds.
