In order to investigate the corrosion behavior of carbon steel in seawater and seawater reverse osmosis permeate(RO permeate)
the corrosion products were analyzed by the Scanning Electron Microscope(SEM) and X-Ray Diffraction(XRD)
combined with the AC impedance measurement for the corrosion system. Results show that
the corrosion rate of carbon steel in RO permeate is much higher than that in seawater because of the significant difference between the rust layers formed under each condition.Rust layer formed in seawater consists of γ-FeOOH(the main composition)
α-FeOOH
Fe3O4 and a little β-FeOOH
and has a protective effect on metal. However
the one formed in RO permeate is composed of γ-FeOOH
Fe3O4(significant proportion) and a little α-FeOOH
deposites on the surface of metal and causes the severe corrosion.
