In order to determine the ignition characteristics especially the ignition temperature of an anthracite coal in O2 /CO2 atmospheres
the ignition gas temperature of Yangquan anthracite coal was measured in air(21%O2 /79%N2)atmosphere and O2 /CO2 atmospheres with O2 volumetric concentration of 10%
21%
30%and 40%in a drop tube furnace. Then the improved heterogeneous thermal explosion model was applied to predict the ignition temperatures of gas and coal particles
and they were compared with the experimental results. The results show that
the ignition temperature of Yangquan anthracite coal in O2 /CO2 atmosphere is significantly higher than that in O2 /N2 atmosphere with the same oxygen concentration. This is due to the high molar specific heat of CO2 and the lower mass diffusivity of O2 in CO2
compared with that of N2.Moreover
the ignition temperature of Yangquan anthracite coal exponentially decreases with the increase of oxygen concentration in O2 /CO2 atmospheres. The predicted ignition gas temperatures agreed well with experimental ones in all atmospheres.
