Rigid jumper is usually adopted in the double-circuit strain angled tower of the domestic UHV substation incoming line
thus the risk of lightning shielding failure may increase because of the increasement of the protection angle at the rigid jumper extremities. In order to ensure the operation safety of the UHV substation
we put forward a three-dimensional leader progress model for the lightning shielding performance estimation of the double-circuit UHV AC strained angled tower. The lightning strike vulnerability locations where might have a higher probability to launch the upward leader were identified for the phase conductors
the rigid jumper
and the ground wire
respectively. The maximum lightning shielding failure current and shielding failure rate(SFFOR) under different protection layout were estimated. The results show that the SFFOR of rigid jumper will be blow 0.1 times/(100 km·a) when the protection angle of phase conductor is ≤–5°. It is referred that the protection angle of the rigid jumper extremities is not an essential factor. Compared to the prediction of EGM
the cross arm length for the outer side ground wire of SJ322 P tower can be reduced from 36 m to 28 m
and for the inner side
it can be reduced from 27 m to 25 m. Relevant results has been adopted in the lightning protection design of Ximeng to Shengli 1 000 kV UHV AC transmission project.
