To investigate the influences of electric field of conductors surface on conductor icing
experiments were carried out in a climate room based on corona cage at INGIVRE laboratories
University of Quebec in Chicoutimi(UQAC). The experimental results show that the electric field has significant influences on ice weight and appearance
icicle spacing
corona loss
leakage conductance
and capacitance. With the increase of electric field
water film could be observed on the conductor surface under rime accretion and the length of icicles decreases under glaze ice accretion. Under both rime and glaze ice conditions
the weight of ice accreted increases with electric field strength up to 20 k V/cm and then decreases as it increases further. When the precipitation rate is low
and the water film is frozen immediately when it reaches the bottom of the conductor due to gravity
the icicle spacing is independent of the conductor surface electric field. When the precipitation rate is sufficient
icicle spacing decreases as the electric field at the surface of the conductor increases. For both rime and glaze ice accretion
the corona loss and the leakage conductance induced by corona discharge increase with an increase of electric field. Under glaze ice condition
due to longer icicles
the capacitance per unit length is higher when the electric field is 5 k V/cm compared with that of 25 k V/cm.
