The icing problem has become a major threat to the development of wind power in China. The hydrophobic coatings can promote overcooled water droplets to roll from the wind blade surface and reduce the accumulation of water for icing
then relieve the icing degree. So it is a potential anti-icing method for wind blades. Consequently
the artificial icing tests were carried out based on NACA7715 model blades with 4 kinds of different SAR(silicone acrylate resin) hydrophobic coatings through a wind tunnel in an artificial climate chamber
and the bare blade was arranged as the contrast group
5 types of wind velocity and 3 types of AOA(angle of attack) conditions were arranged for icing tests. The ice weights of blades was measured every 15 minutes under the wind velocity test conditions and the icing distribution of blades was observed under AOA test conditions. The results indicate that the hydrophobic coatings help the water droplets roll off significantly and delay the icing process
finally reduce the icing degree when the wind velocity is below 10 m/s. However
the anti-icing performance of coatings will decline when the wind velocity increases continuously. Moreover
the icing area and ice morphology of different blades are very different even under the same AOA condition. When the AOA changes from a negative value to a positive value
the changes of icing distribution among the blades are very different.
