Modular multilevel converter(MMC) has been widely used in high-voltage direct-current(HVDC) transmission systems with its excellent characteristics. To solve the problem that the half-bridge sub-module is unable to block dc fault current
we designed a diode reverse blocking double sub-module(D-RBSM). The DC fault clearing mechanism of the sub-module was analyzed in detail
and the economic benefit was compared with that of other topologies. Finally
the correctness and validity of the sub-module topology ware verified by building a simulation model in MATLAB/Simulink environment. The results show that the D-RBSM-MMC can realize the blocking of DC fault current. At the same time
it can effectively reduce the strict trigger pulse synchronization requirements of RB-IGBT and improve the safety factor of the system.
