Under the background of significant increase in voltage class and the length of alternating current(AC) cross-linked polyethylene(XLPE) power cable
it is difficult for conventional test methods such as resonant AC voltage to meet the requirements of these long-distance cables with bulky capacitance. Consequently
we clarified the prevailing domestic and foreign guides and regulations in commissioning tests for AC XLPE power cables. Then
by summarizing the research and service experiences at home and abroad
we compared the limitations and disadvantages of various voltage sources. At last
we summarized and discussed the merits of the damped alternating current(DAC) method and its application prospects in EHV long-distance AC XLPE power cable. Besides
the practical application and problems of the DAC method were emphasized. The effectiveness and equivalence of various voltage sources in insulation assessment were compared. The results can provide references and instructions for the voltage sources selection in commissioning tests for large capacity and long-distance AC XLPE power cable.
