A Novel High Frequency Current Source Driver With Discontinuous Current

  • The frequency-dependent losses of the power MOSFET are increasing,especially the switching loss and gate drive loss,when the switching frequency of the power converters increases.In order to reduce the mentioned losses,this paper proposed a new current source driver(CSD) with the discontinuous inductor current.Compared to the continuous CSDs,the most important advantage of the proposed CSD is the small inductance(typically,20 nH at 1 MHz switching frequency).This translates into the footprint reduction of as much as 90% compared with the continuous CSDs.The proposed CSD can also achieve fast switching speed and reduced switching loss.The gate drive loss can be recovered.Due to the discontinuous current,the circulating loss also is low.In addition,the CSD can achieve wide range operation of duty cycle and switching frequency.The experimental results verified its advantages.
