To explore the reasons for frequent tower cylinder buckling phenomena in the wind power industry
this article takes the European EC3 shell structure code
which is the most commonly used calculation method for tower buckling
as the research object. It analyzes the similarities and differences between the new and old versions of this code in terms of their methodologies for calculating buckling capacity. A quantitative analysis is conducted on key parameters such as manufacturing quality and buckling reduction factors used in the calculation methods outlined in both codes. The study reveals significant differences in the formulas for calculating the meridional buckling capacity between the new and old EC3 Shell Structures Codes. Furthermore
it highlights that manufacturing quality has a substantial impact on the buckling capacity of wind turbine towers. Notably
when designing towers using the new version of the code
careful consideration should be given to the selection of manufacturing quality parameters to ensure accurate and reliable buckling capacity calculations.
