Janus nanoparticles as lubricant and anti-wear additives in water-based drilling fluid
Based on the structural engineering and regulation strategy of Janus nanoparticles
hydrophobic polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) and hydrophilic silica (SiO
2
) were combined to fabricate PTFE@SiO
2
Janus nanoparticles with excellent dispersibility in aqueous media. The lubrication and anti-wear performance of Janus nanoparticles after high-temperature aging in weighted bentonite-based slurry and water-based drilling fluid systems was systematically investigated. The results show that at a dosage of 2%(mass fraction)
Janus nanoparticles reduce the friction coefficient of the base slurr
y and drilling fluid systems by 51.3% and 36.5%
respectively
and exhibit a clear synergistic effect when combined with ester-based lubricants. In addition
Janus nanoparticles demonstrate superior anti-wear performance
with significantly smaller wear scar areas under high-load conditions compared with ester lubricants. Mechanistic analysis indicates that
during the friction process
the PTFE side of Janus nanoparticles readily forms a continuous lubricating film owing to the facile slippage of molecular chains
thereby reducing the friction coefficient; the rigid SiO
2
side enhances the mechanical strength of the lubricating film
ensuring stable lubrication performance. Overall
the unique Janus amphiphilic structure is the key to the outstanding lubrication and anti-wear performance of the nanoparticles.
