Coordinated fault ride‑through control strategy for the receiving‑end AC grid of a DRU‑MMC‑based renewable energy HVDC transmission system
To address the overvoltage problems of MMC submodule (SM) capacitors and DC transmission lines caused by surplus power during receiving end AC grid faults in a renewable energy HVDC transmission system based on a diode rectifier unit (DRU) and a modular multilevel converter (MMC)
this paper proposes a coordinated fault ride‑through strategy that combines SM capacitor energy storage with a DC energy dissipation device. First
the fault characteristics of the DRU‑MMC system during receiving‑end AC grid faults are analyzed. Mathematical constraints on the maximum energy storage duration of the SM capacitors under different fault conditions are derived
and the operating principles of three SM energy storage operation modes under different sending‑end power levels and voltage sag depths are revealed. On this basis
an adaptive SM capacitor voltage reference setting method based on arm current limit is proposed. Combined with a three‑level energy optimization algorithm
the proposed strategy enables accurate tracking of the SM capacitor voltage reference while maintaining capacitor voltage balance
thereby achieving temporary energy storage and orderly energy release under device safety constraints. Finally
the effectiveness of the proposed fault ride‑through strategy is verified by simulations.
