[Significance] The installed capacity of wind and photovoltaic power has reached 1 680 GW in China. However
their inherent volatility and intermittency pose higher demands on the flexibility and regulation capability of the power system. Electrochemical energy storage(EES) has emerged as a key technology to support highpenetration renewable energy integration owing to its advantages such as rapid response capability
high energy conversion efficiency
and favorable economics. [Discussion] This review systematically explores the core issues of integrated electrochemical energy storage power stations and renewable power plants. In terms of system design
different topological configurations of EES connected to wind power
photovoltaics
and hybrid wind-photovoltaic power plants are compared
with their technical and economic performances being assessed for connection at different locations(DC side
AC side
and substation side). The analysis indicates that centralized AC-side integration holds an engineering-dominant position
while DC-side coupling and AC/DC hybrid configurations also show technical potential. For operational evaluation
focusing on three typical application scenarios(smoothing power fluctuations
improving generation forecast accuracy
and enhancing peak-shaving ability)
this paper places technical indicators(e.g.
fluctuation suppression effect
charge/discharge characteristics) and economic indicators(e.g.
cost-effectiveness
investment return) within the same framework for analysis
thereby providing a quantitative basis for the optimal operation and informed decision-making of source-storage coupled systems. With regard to planning and configuration
a generalized methodology characterized as “scenario-driven
strategy-coupled
and capacity-adapted” is proposed
and the control strategies for energy storage operation as well as the power and capacity sizing methods under different scenarios are summarized. [Prospect] Finally
this review highlights future key directions including coupling with electricity market mechanisms
integration of artificial intelligence technologies
and development of multi-type energy storage complementary integration. This review aims to provide a systematic theoretical reference and technical guidance for the planning
design
and operation of sourcestorage coordination in new-type power systems.
