Life Cycle CO2 Emission Analysis of a Kilowatt-level Thermoelectric Generator for Exhaust Heat Recovery from Ship Engine

To investigate the carbon dioxide emission footprint of a kilowatt-level thermoelectric generator for exhaust heat recovery from ship engine
a life cycle assessment was conducted to compare the effect of output power per thermoelectric module and different power source conditions on the carbon emission reduction efficiencies. The results show that the use of the pilot-scale thermoelectric generator reduces 104.45 tons of CO

equivalent (t CO
2
e) throughout its 20 years life cycle.Increasing the output power of the thermoelectric generator can effectively increase its total carbon emission reduction amount. When the output power of a single thermo
electric module reaches 14.5 W
an annual CO

reduction of 47.44 t CO

e can be achieved by the generator. Besides
the offsetting power source conditions also has a significant impact on its life cycle carbon footprints. The results obtained can be used to provide theoretical basis and operational experience for exploring cleaner and more efficient waste heat recovery technologies.
