Caohai Lake is the largest natural lake in Guizhou Province. In accordance with relevant standards and guidelines
this study evaluates 17 indicators in 4 categories selected for the health assessment of Caohai Lake. The scores for basin condition
water condition
biota
and social services are 91. 1
70. 2
65. 3
and 94. 0
respectively
resulting in a weighted overall score of 80. 5 and a health classification of healthy. Nevertheless
considerable scope for improvement remains in several indicators
including variation in lake inflow
water quality
trophic status
phytoplankton density
and aquatic macrophyte coverage. Based on the assessment results
recommended measures include integrated urban-rural environmental management around Caohai Lake
control of internal pollution loads
further research on biodiversity
studies of water replenishment projects
pilot mechanisms integrating lake protection and operation
and a quantitative reward-and-penalty mechanism for lake protection. These measures are intended to improve the aquatic environment and contribute to the conservation of Caohai Lake
which is the “Pearl of the Plateau” in Guizhou Province.
