Under the global low-carbon transition trend of energy
inverter-based resources (IBRs)
represented by wind and photovoltaic power
are gradually becoming the dominant generation in power systems. However
contemporary IBRs predominantly prioritize active power injection
often lacking sufficient dynamic voltage support during grid faults
thereby jeopardizing power system stability. To avoid transient voltage instability in IBR-dominated systems
it is critical to enhance dynamic voltage support capability of converters while respecting their current-limiting constraints. This paper provides a comprehensive review of grid following (GFL) and grid forming (GFM) converters dynamic voltage support technologies from following three aspects: power system requirements
control design
and future research directions. First
transient voltage stability issues are categorized based on dominant instability dynamics
and dynamic voltage support requirements are derived from grid codes. Next
the generalized control structures of GFL and GFM converters are outlined
and their dynamic voltage support intrinsic mechanisms are analyzed from control variable perspective. Subsequently
different control structures of dynamic voltage support strategies for GFL and GFM converters are elaborated
along with a comparative analysis of their advantages and disadvantages. Finally
future research directions for GFL and GFM converters dynamic voltage support technologies are discussed.
