Prospects and Challenges of Gravity Energy Storage Applications in New Type Power System
Gravity energy storage system (GESS) can play an important role in smoothing power fluctuation and shaving peak-valley load for new type power systems with high proportion of renewable energy sources
due to its outstanding advantages such as inherent safe characteristic
flexibility in location for installation and capacity configuration
capability of charge and discharge in depth
no limit of charge and discharge times
and capability for application in larger scale
etc. In this paper
the types and development status of GESS are summarized first. Then
a universal charging and discharging model of GESS is established
and the charging and discharging power characteristics of GESS are analyzed. On this basis
according to the characteristics of GESS and its grid connection requirements
two feasible schemes for grid connection of GESS are proposed
and the charging and discharging operation simulations of corresponding two schemes are carried out based on a practical engineering application scenario. Finally
the application prospects and technical challenges of GESS in new type power system are presented. This paper can provide references for further research and engineering application of GESS technology in new type power system.
