Rock fracture mechanics is used widely in geotechnical engineering . Fracture’s simulation technology is one of the main directions of research; but also a bottleneck restricts the development of fracture mechanics. This problem can be solved relying on the secondary development of ABAQUS. It is based on the extended finite element idea. It is possible to simulate the discontinuous displacement field through the introduction of Heaviside function. Also the crack tip displacement field can be simulated by introducting crack tip approximation function. Then it is easy to solve stress intensity factor (SIF) by J integral. Finally
crack growth direction is predicted by using the max circumferential stress criterion. Through three classic models of fracture mechanics
it is easy to verify the feasibility and accuracy of this method by comparing the calculated values with the theoretical values.
