Piled-raft foundations can be employed to transfer loads induced by embankments or surcharges to stiffer stratum through soft soil strata and thus to mitigate negative skin friction and lateral push on adjacent pile foundations such as bridge abutments. Using a simplified method based on Mindlin stress solutions as well as 3-dimensional numerical analyses with elastic and elastoplastic constitutive models
the negative skin friction and lateral push on the piles for the Great Trans-oceanic Hangzhou Bay Bridge due to intersecting Jiaxing Port embankment are evaluated. The results indicate that the simplified method based on Mindlin stress solutions can be adopted roughly to assess the negative skin friction and lateral push on piles due to adjacent pile foundations as it compares well with numerical analyses.
