The probability distribution type of soil strength affects the results of reliability and risk analysis of geotechnical problems. Many soil and rockfill samples have been collected from earth dams and tested in lab. The probability distributions of these soil or rockfill samples are coincident with the theoretical normal distribution or logarithmic normal distribution. The selection of logarithmic normal distribution in risk and reliability analysis can avoid the parameters to become negative
