An improved method considering variable factor of safety is proposed to describe the progressive failure process of soil slopes. The proposed method includes finding the minimum general safety factor of critical slip surface and searching the optimal combination of the intension factors of the intercolumn. The double MDCP method was applied to solve the optimal problem. It is concluded that the improved method is more reasonable and more efficient than the common ones.
