Numerical simulation software FLAC2D is used to simulate the failure mechanism of slender coal pillars (which are of much lower width to height ratios) during high wall mining of thick seam. The results reproduce the whole process from the initiation of pillar failure

to plastic zone being joined together. The characteristics of stress distribution and failure mechanism of coal pillars are discussed by the numerically obtained stress yield during pillar deformation and failure process.
