Atmospheric-pressure non-equilibrium plasma jets(APNP-Js) are generated in the open space
rather than inside a narrow discharge gap. This unique property advances the wide applications of APNP-Js
such as material surface treatment
nanotechnology and plasma medicine. In the past decade
the development of APNP-Js is blooming. APNP-Js has been considered as one of new key technologies for low-temperature plasma applications. In this paper
from the perspective of power supply
several typical APNP-Js driven by direct current(DC) power supply
alternative current(AC) power supply
radio frequency(RF) power supply
pulsed power supply
and double power supplies are introduced first. Then
a comparison among the characteristics of APNP-Js driven by different power supplies is presented. It is found that
with the same consumed power
APNP-Js driven by pulsed power are longer and more reactive
but remain at room temperature. The effects of parameters of the power supplies on APNP-Js are analyzed further. It is revealed that
1 As the driven frequency increases from 1 Hz into RF range
the length of APNP-Js decreases
plasma bullets turns into continuous columns in the dynamics of APNP-Js. 2 As the pulse rising time decreases from several μs to 50 ns
the length of APNP-Js increases and the electron temperature becomes higher. 3 By comparing the characteristics of APNP-Js driven by positive and negative applied voltage
it is found that APNP-Js with negative polarity are shorter
propagating slower
but are of higher electric field strength in the plasma column behind the streamer head. In the last
the relationship between APNP-Js and the driven power supply is discussed
and several important open issues are proposed
such as how to generate more reactive APNP-Js with less input power
how to allocate and optimize the energies coupling into plasmas.
