Experimental Research on Phenol Degradation in Drinking Water by Strong Ionization Discharge
In order to remove toxic organic compounds from drinking water
taking phenol for example
we used high concentration hydroxyl radical(·OH) and other active species
which were produced by strong ionization discharges
to treat phenol-containing water
and studied the effects of three factors
including initial phenol concentration
·OH ratio concentration
and water temperature on the phenol degradation in static experiments. The kinetics of phenol degradation and the influence of the three factors above on degradation speed were also analyzed. Moreover
through pilot scale experiments
the relation of degradation efficiency to injection power and treatment time was investigated as well. The results show that the reaction of oxidative degradation of phenol by ·OH and other active species is in accordance with apparent pseudo-first-order kinetic reaction. Both of efficiency and speed of phenol degradation increase with increasing ·OH concentration
decrease with increasing initial concentration of phenol
and are influenced barely by water temperature. According to the pilot scale experiments
the degradation efficiency of phenol increases with the injection power and treatment time; when the injection power and treatment time were 600 W and 5 min
respectively
neither phenol nor its intermediates were detected using high performance liquid chromatography(HPLC)
i.e. the degradation efficiency of phenol was 100.00%.
