Surface Properties and Discharge Resistance of Surface Fluorinated Epoxy/Fiberglass Composite Insulators
Epoxy resin(DGEBA and Polyetheramines system)/fiberglass composite sheets were surface fluorinated in a laboratory vessel using a F2/N2 mixture with 12.5% F2 at the different temperatures of 25
55
and 85 ℃ for the same time of 60 min
to investigate the effects of fluorination temperature on surface properties and discharge resistance. ATR-IR analyses indicate that fluorination leads to substantial changes in surface chemical composition and structure
depending on fluorination temperature. Measurements of surface conductivity and surface potential decay consistently show that the surface fluorinated samples have higher surface conduction than the unfluorinated(original) sample
and surface conduction increases with the fluorination temperature. Contact angle measurements reveal that fluorination will increase the surface wettability of the composite insulator
while the surface wettability tends to decrease with the increase of fluorination temperature. AC flashover tests in the laboratory environment further indicate that the surface fluorinated samples have a much higher degradation or tracking resistance in comparison with the virgin sample
but the fluorination only leads to a marginal increase in AC flashover voltage. In addition
the flashover test results also showed an association of the tracking resistance with fluorination temperature.
