A fault section location method for high impedance faults based on a declining periodic component of zero-sequence current in a resonant grounding system

  • Abstract: This paper presents a fault section location approach based on a declining periodic component of a zero-sequence current when a high-impedance fault (HIF) occurred in a distribution network with arc suppression coil grounding. It analyzes the parallel resonance process between the arc suppression coil and the system capacitance to ground when a HIF occurs; the distribution characteristics of the zero-sequence current declining periodic component in the upstream and downstream of the fault points are also investigated. Therefore, based on the phase difference for the zero-sequence current declining periodic component in the upstream and downstream fault points, a fault section location method that uses the fault location terminal to compare the phase difference of two adjacent detection points is obtained. The feasibility, effectiveness, and reliability of the proposed fault-section location scheme are demonstrated by RTDS and MATLAB.
